Students will present their work, evaluate peers and complete a self-evaluation. The professor’s evaluation and student’s self-evaluation will determine the grade for this component of the course. Evaluation criteria will be determined early in the course with the submission of the project plan.

Through the completion of this project students will meet the following course objectives:




1. Identify contemporary topic(s) for inquiry within the discipline of nursing. A. Describe a gap in nursing knowledge.

B. Formulate new research questions.

C. Develop a narrow, manageable, specific topical focus.

D. Identify a research topic, problem and purpose for a project.

E. Justify the importance of the selected project.

2. Refine evidence-informed entry level competencies that reflect developments in society, health care, nursing knowledge and current best practice. A. Appraise research studies.

B. Refine previous literature reviews.

C. Critique the significance of published studies.

D. Describe the scope of nursing research in an area of interest based on an updated literature review.

3. Enact practices and protocols for examining a chosen topic of inquiry. B. Develop a clear purpose for the project.

C. Based on the purpose of the project, justify the most appropriate project design.


4. Demonstrate ethical critical inquiry in relation to new knowledge and technologies that change, enhance or support nursing disciplinary members. B. Recall the human rights issues that must be considered in a nursing research project.

D. Recognize the procedures that are used to protect human rights within the research process.

E. Respect participants’ capacity for self-determination.

F. Plan to protect the rights of vulnerable subjects.

G. Respect and uphold research ethical principles.

5. Create a product to demonstrate application and integration of nursing inquiry processes. A. Apply the research process to a project.

B. Create a product that contributes to a new understanding of nursing knowledge.

6. Engage in professional collegial discourse and sharing of ideas to support a culture that supports nursing inquiry. A. Identify an appropriate approach to presenting the project.

B. Present the sections of the research project in a logical way, which align with the specific purpose of the project.

C. Engage in self-assessment.

D. Use quality evidence in practice.

E. Explain the link between evidence and practice.


What is the project?

To date, students have identified work on research proposals, literature reviews or research assistant work as their project.
